Procedures Overview – Heart, Lung, Vascular

For over two decades Florida’s Ocala Heart Institute has provided the best Florida cardiovascular care in the state by implementing a team approach, incorporating the skills of interventional cardiologists, cardiovascular anesthesiologists, cardiovascular and vascular surgeons. We believe this multifaceted approach gives our very best to our patients, satisfying our mission to honor God through our practice, treating physical needs as well as the emotional, social and spiritual needs of our patients.

Bypass Grafting: When angioplasty is not an option, medicines and other medical therapy fail or the patient has multiple arteries or artery branches that have narrowed, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG surgery) may be the best choice.

Valve Repair: When heart valves become diseased, repair or replacement is necessary. The rewards are great: shortness of breath and fatigue no longer control your activities and your life is prolonged.

Maze Procedure: A delicate surgery requiring the expertise of highly trained, experienced surgeons, it controls irregular heartbeat by restoring the natural rhythm through a series of strategically placed scars that block stray electrical impulses.

Carotid Artery: Restoring proper blood flow to the brain, carotid artery surgery removes plaque and clot blockages from the veins.

Endarterectomy: Our team approach combines the skills of some of the best surgeons and anesthesiologists to give our patients a multifaceted approach to eliminating artery plaque.

Pacemakers: Implanted (usually just below the collarbone) to regulate heart rate and rhythm, it also treats fainting spells (syncope), congestive heart failure, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Defibrillators: A device used to treat arrhythmias, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) are similar to pacemakers, but also employ high-energy electrical pulses.

Aneurysm Repairs: Bulges in the aorta can grow and burst, requiring open abdominal surgery, but less invasive endovascular surgery is an option in some cases.

Dor Procedure: Used when biventricular pacing or a defibrillator are not viable options, however, other symptoms must be present, such as angina, heart failure, arrhythmias or a combination of the three.

Lung surgery: A procedure used for tumor/growth biopsy; removal of tissue damaged by emphysema, or cancer; injuries that cause the lung to collapse; infection; blood or blood clots; fluid buildup in the chest cavity

Decortications: Removal of a thick membrane that restricts lung expansion, decortication, or pleural peel, once only a major thoracic operation, is now sometimes performed through thoracoscopy.

The Ocala Heart Institute began in January of 1988 as a vision of three individuals – a cardiovascular surgeon, an invasive cardiologist and a cardiovascular anesthesiologist. The goal was to draw upon the expertise of these three specialties to deliver the best quality of cardiothoracic and vascular care to the heart, lung and vascular patient. These three specialties working in complete cooperation to provide the highest quality of care with the shortest length of stay in a cost-effective manner has been born out by the recognition awarded to the Ocala Heart Institute since its inception more than 20 years ago.

The concept has resulted growth from approximately 1,500 catheterizations and 450 open operations the first year to the present volume of over 8,000 catheterizations, 2,000 open heart cases and 1,000 vascular and thoracic cases per year.
